Choosing an HDMI Switcher

An HDMI switcher connects several HDMI sources to one display and lets you choose which source is shown. Unlike a matrix switcher, which feeds many displays at once, a switcher drives a single output, which makes it a simple and cost-effective way to add inputs to one screen or projector. If you need to send different sources to several displays, choose an HDMI matrix switcher instead.

Key Digital HDMI switchers are full 4K/UHD 18Gbps with HDR and HDCP 2.2, and most models offer automatic switching, so the display follows the most recently connected or active source with no button press. Depending on the model you also get audio de-embedding to L/R, optical, or balanced outputs, plus IP, RS-232, and IR control for integration with Compass Control or a third-party system.

Pick the form factor that fits the install. The KD-Pro4x1X-3 is a four-input pro switcher with a web UI and auto-switching. Slim and wall-plate transmitter models suit lecterns and conference tables, and HDBaseT PoH models extend the switched signal over a single Cat6 cable to a remote receiver. An authorized Key Digital dealer can help match the right switcher to your room.

Frequently asked questions

What is an HDMI switcher?

An HDMI switcher connects several HDMI sources to a single display and lets you select which source is shown. Key Digital switchers do this at full 4K 18Gbps, and most offer automatic switching.

What is the difference between automatic and manual HDMI switching?

A manual switcher changes source only when you press a button or send a command. An automatic switcher changes source on its own, following the most recently connected or active input, which is convenient for BYOD and conference rooms. Most Key Digital switchers support automatic switching.

What is the difference between an HDMI switcher, a matrix, and a splitter?

A switcher sends many sources to one display. A matrix routes many sources to many displays independently. A splitter or distribution amplifier sends one source to many displays. Choose based on how many displays you need to feed.

Do Key Digital HDMI switchers support 4K?

Yes. Key Digital HDMI switchers are full 4K/UHD 18Gbps with HDR and HDCP 2.2, with audio de-embedding and IP, RS-232, and IR control on supported models.

Can an HDMI switcher extend the signal over Cat6?

Yes. Key Digital HDBaseT PoH switchers combine switching with extension, sending the selected source over a single Cat6 cable to a remote receiver, with power over the same cable on supported models.
