Screen Size & Viewing Distance Calculator

Find the right display size for a room — or the ideal viewing distance — with a live top-down diagram.

Two questions, one tool: what size display do you need for a given viewing distance, and how far should viewers sit or stand from a screen. Pick a use case below — the calculator uses the right standard for it (viewing-angle for entertainment, AVIXA legibility for meeting and signage content) and shows how 4K vs 1080p changes how close you can be.

How far should you sit from a screen?

For entertainment, distance is set by how much of your field of view the screen fills — SMPTE recommends about a 30° viewing angle (≈ 1.6× the diagonal), THX about 40° for a more immersive, cinema-like feel. For meeting rooms, classrooms and signage, the constraint is whether the farthest viewer can read the content: AVIXA's guidance caps the farthest viewer at roughly 6× the screen height for general decision-making content, or 8× for passive/at-a-glance signage. Higher resolution lets you sit closer before individual pixels become visible — about 1.5× the picture height for 4K versus 3× for 1080p.

Frequently asked questions

How far should you sit from a 65-inch TV?
~8.8 ft for SMPTE mixed viewing, ~6.5 ft for THX immersive; as close as ~4 ft with 4K.

What size for a 10–12 ft room?
About a 74″ 16:9 display at 10 ft for general living-room viewing; larger for immersive setups.

How do I size a conference-room screen?
Keep the farthest viewer within ~6× the screen height — at 12 ft, use at least ~49″ diagonal.

Does 4K let you sit closer than 1080p?
Yes — ~1.5× picture height for 4K vs ~3× for 1080p.
