LED Video Wall Calculator

Size an LED wall from pixel pitch and cabinet grid: total resolution, physical size, aspect ratio, and viewing distance.

Plan a direct-view LED wall by pixel pitch and cabinet grid. Enter your pitch, cabinet size, and how many cabinets go across and down to get the total resolution, physical size, and recommended viewing distance.

Width x height of one cabinet. Common cabinets are 500 x 500 or 600 x 337.5 mm.

How to calculate LED wall resolution

Pixels per cabinet equal the cabinet size divided by the pixel pitch. A 500 mm cabinet at 2.5 mm pitch is 200 x 200 pixels, so a 6-across by 3-high grid is 1200 x 600 pixels and 3 x 1.5 m. Finer pitch means more pixels in the same space and a sharper image up close, at higher cost. Match the pitch to how close your audience sits.

Pixel pitch and viewing distance

Pixel pitchClosest comfortable distanceTypical use
1.2 mm~1.2 mLobbies, control rooms, close viewing
1.9 mm~1.9 mBoardrooms, retail
2.5 mm~2.5 mConference and event walls
3.9 mm~3.9 mLarge rooms, stage backdrops
6 mm~6 mOutdoor and long-throw

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate LED video wall resolution?

Divide the cabinet width and height in mm by the pixel pitch for pixels per cabinet, then multiply by the number of cabinets across and down. A 500 mm cabinet at 2.5 mm pitch is 200 x 200 px, so a 6 x 3 grid is 1200 x 600 px.

What is pixel pitch?

Pixel pitch is the distance in mm between the centers of two adjacent LEDs. A smaller pitch packs pixels closer for higher resolution and sharper close-up viewing.

How far should people sit from an LED wall?

A common rule sets the closest comfortable distance in meters equal to the pixel pitch in mm, so a 2.5 mm wall reads well from about 2.5 m. Pixels become indistinguishable to 20/20 vision at roughly pitch times 3.4 m.

How do I pick the right pixel pitch?

Match the pitch to the closest viewer. Fine 1.2 to 1.9 mm for close viewing in lobbies and control rooms; coarser 3 to 6 mm for large rooms, stages, or outdoor walls seen from a distance.

What aspect ratio should the wall be?

Choose a grid that lands on your content's aspect ratio. A 16:9 grid suits standard video. The calculator shows the resulting aspect ratio so you can match it to your source and processor.
